Sunday 9th March, Hot Rods.
The day of the first meeting of the year dawned bright but cold. With
several cars still to be finished the field wasn’t as large as was expected,
but with Richard Digby a new man to the circuit and Terry Wilcox and Terry Bell
returning after an absences of the best part off last year, still enough to make
an interesting field. Race one proved a shock for most of them, when Lee
Marchant who was not the fastest of men last year roared away from his yellow
grade start. Quickly leaving the other in his wake and indeed catching the rear
of the field, Marchant taking the win with nearly a half lap lead. Gary Heath
worked through to second and held it for nine laps only to lose out towards the
end, first to Martin Dean, then Terry Wilcox and Terry Bell forced away by
putting Heath back to fifth at flag fall, Richard Rigby filling the other points
position.
Result: Lee Marchant, Martin Dean, Terry Wilcox, Terry
Bell, Gary Heath
For the second race Marchant was moved back on the grid.
This made no difference, he was quickly into the premier position but this time
had Wilcox breathing down his neck. Bell was also getting in on the action
moving his Puma closer to the first two, but with ten laps gone Bell went out in
a very expensive looking cloud of smoke, with oil and water trailing from the
Yellow machine not to be seen again. Meanwhile Dean was moving up the field,
closing up with Wilcox and running nose to tail over the last three laps, but he
couldn’t find the extra to make a pass and the first three went over the line
as one. Marchant with his second win of the day.
Result: Marchant, Wilcox, Dean
The Final, Wilcox got the best start this time jumping
Marchant. Marchant not giving in easily, really making Wilcox work for his lead
hounding him the whole way. This eventually allowed Dean, who had crept up to
join the lead battle to slip under him and take second but he couldn’t do
anything about Wilcox and that’s the order they finished. Digby fourth.
Result: Wilcox, Dean, Marchant, Richard Digby
