Final: NUL AND VOID
Sunday March 9th, Economy Rods.
Richard Sharp won the final, but Gary Edwards was top dog
on this occasion taking two heat wins and third in the final.
Heat one was led away by the returning Mick Thorogood, but
Edwards who had taken to the outside line from the off was up to fifth after
only one tour. Then second a few laps later. Edwards taking first with seven
laps down, Richard Sharp was also with him from lap six and duly when second,
Edwards then opened up a very slight gap from Sharp, that’s how they finished,
Terry Nelson claiming third from Andrew Newton, Steve Stansfield and Richard
Ansell in the other places.
Result: Edwards, Sharp, Nelson, Newton, Stansfield,
Ansell, Monty, Tadman
Heat two, "no 4" was the first to lead from Monty
Montgomery but the flying Edwards soon split these two. Edwards moving second on
the fourth lap but taking another seven laps to find away past no 4, Sharp
followed after another two laps to make the same one two again. Newton this time
claiming third with Nelson down to fourth.
Result: Edwards, Sharp, Newton, Nelson, number 4,
Stansfield, Ansell, Monty
The final, With Edwards moved further back on the grid this
time. Sharp was making good use of his position. Sharp shot away at the off
storming around the outside and into the lead at the start of the second lap,
Edwards meanwhile was back in eighth place. Newton was in pursuit of Sharp,
moving into second from the third lap. Brudenell third, further back Edwards
came up behind Stansfield moved out for a pass, got up level but couldn’t get
the extra needed to take the place. The pair of them both Fiesta Mk3 mounted,
one pinto powered rear wheel drive, the other CVH front wheel drive, ran side by
side over the next seven laps, first one would have the edge then the other but
finally Edwards got enough traction out of the pits bend to out brake his
adversary into the next bend and take the position. Edwards then reeled in the
two front men, he just caught up to Newton as the laps ran out. The result being
First Sharp followed by Newton, Edwards, Stansfield and Nelson
Result: Sharp, Newton, Edwards,
Stansfield, Nelson, no 4, Monty, Tadman
